This was one of the most unexpected findings in our conversations. We have found that the relationship between faculty and students is in crisis.
Our collective research reveals a concerning breakdown in trust between students and faculty around AI use. Many of us report feeling caught in a cycle of suspicion, where legitimate work is questioned and genuine learning efforts are met with skepticism. This erosion of trust is having real impacts on our educational experience and mental well-being. The data from our conversations reveals this isn't just about AI use—it's about a fundamental shift in the student-faculty relationship that needs to be addressed. Below we have a sampling of a few quotes from our podcasts that speak to this crisis.
"Every professor would always emphasize 'well I know when you're using AI' or 'I could tell when you're using AI', but in reality they actually don't."
From "Beyond Algorithms":
"Sometimes teachers are using AI to try to find our AI in our work and it's just a messy situation like it causes a distrust in the community already."
"We get in trouble for it. So I think it's very confusing how they don't work together as an administrative to really, you know, tie us all together."
From "Critical Thinking in Crisis":
"A lot of students are getting like falsely accused of like plagiarizing when um in reality they've used it through Grammarly or like used AI to like paraphrase like really like hard to understand topics."
"Even some students that don't use them are accused of being used, of using things like chatgpt...and it makes you feel bad because you're actually trying to learn."
"I've seen through discussion boards or different assignments I've done in college that are like public where you know all the students in class can view them and you can see sometimes someone will have copy and pasted straight from like chat GPT... their writing isn't the same or their format or their their choice of words are not the same as previous posts they've written."
From "The AI Crutch":
"And I have like seen people and talked to people who have been accused of using AI and it really upset them. Imagine putting your heart and soul into an assignment that you did on your own that you thought was like the best thing and then your professor's like, 'Yeah, you're getting the F because this is AI.' Yep. That's crazy... if they see like a something that's like really well done and people put a lot of effort in, they might just assume automatically it's AI."
From "Digital Divides":
"And professors like they'll yell at students in the beginning of the semester and capitalize is on the syllabus and try and be like, 'Oh, don't use AI, like whatever.' And they'll just do whatever kind of big warnings that they can and they'll think that like will keep students away from using it. But the truth is that like students who do use it kind of just laugh it off."
From "Time Well Spent?":
"I think that professors are now very big on scanning papers cuz I know that's a thing. I don't know what exactly the professors use but I know that they fact-check that we're not using AI. which is crazy because we have this tool now that can do the work for us and sound better than we than we can that now is being like it's being it's easy identified now. And then on the other hand, we have professors who are or teachers who are actually using it to be productive. Professors are using it for brainstorming ideas, for planning their lessons or grading their assignments."
From "Dialogue with AI":
"That is funny because when you are submitting as a student, you're submitting your papers and your professors are pointing out you can't use AI to help you, but then they use AI while they're grading and then you know AI will check something as plagiarism even though it's not or you cited it so it's technically not."
