Our research repeatedly identifies the COVID-19 pandemic as a critical moment that transformed how we use AI. The sudden shift to online learning, combined with reduced access to traditional support systems, created conditions where AI tools became essential rather than optional.
From "Time Well Spent": "The turning point you may ask? We all agreed that it was COVID-19 and there is an immediate dependency on switching online. From there, we never switched back."
From "Decoding Complexity": "At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, students were forced to stay and do their school work at home. We believe that this pandemic was a trigger and reason for the development of AI implication into education. It started to take over teachers roles in education and emergencies like how Zoom used to be our classroom back in 2021."
From "The AI Crutch": "That means whatever students need help, AI is always there with them 24/7 whereas teachers only have a certain time and schedule per week. Therefore, they are not always available for their students concerned."
From "Ethics in the AI Era": "That's really when that app skyrocketed, when people had online classes the most... they felt it was more accessible only cuz they had the anonymity of no one really knowing if they're using AI or not but also like the fact that they aren't in the academic setting."
From "From Tool to Taboo": "I think it's also important to address... the implications of AI and the potential harms they could put themselves in... because AI isn't perfect, but during COVID it became what we had."
From "AI Bandits": "At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, students were forced to stay and do their school work at home. We believe that this pandemic was a trigger and reason for the development of AI in education. It started to take over teachers' roles in education and emergencies like how Zoom used to be our classroom back in 2021."
"AI is rapidly growing and changing our society. How the classroom is run and how students learn has drastically changed throughout the past few years. The turning point you may ask. We all agreed that it was COVID 19 and there is an immediate dependency on switching online. From there we never switched back."
From "Dialogue with AI":
"Most people said that chat GBT was probably the most well-known AI app that was used when they were doing online classes in school. So I found that interesting as well because that's really when that app skyrocketed when people had online classes the most...Exactly I feel like they felt it was more accessible only cause they had the anonymity of no one really knowing if they're using AI or not, but also like the fact that they aren't in the academic setting. So, I guess being able to like have that privacy with their teacher. They're like, "Okay, well, I still need help", so they turn to like AI.
